Where Is Inhambane?
Inhambane is located on the southeastern coast of Mozambique, approximately 450 kilometres north of Maputo.
For divers, one of the most important areas to know is Barra Beach, a beautiful stretch of coastline situated just outside Inhambane town.
SEE Activity Center is based at Praia da Barra, alongside Sentidos Beach Retreat. From here, our dive boats launch directly from the beach and head out into the Indian Ocean to explore the surrounding reef system.

What Is Diving Like in Inhambane?
Diving in Inhambane is generally characterised by warm Indian Ocean water, offshore coral reefs, varied underwater topography and abundant marine life.

Manta Reef
Manta Reef is one of the names that has helped put this part of Mozambique on the international diving map.
As its name suggests, manta rays are one of the animals divers traditionally associate with the site.
But there is an important lesson to be learned from diving in a wild environment: Marine life moves.
Conditions change. Seasons change. Animals change their patterns. And a site that was famous for one particular encounter years ago may not always deliver the same experience today.
That is why experienced local knowledge matters.
Rather than promising a particular animal at a particular reef, our team pays attention to current conditions and recent encounters when deciding where to dive.
The goal is simple: Go where the ocean is giving you the best opportunity that day.
Giant’s Castle
Giant’s Castle is one of the more dramatic offshore reefs in the area and is known for its large-scale reef structure and potential for encounters with bigger marine life.
It is the type of dive where it pays to look beyond the reef itself.
Keep your eyes into the blue.
Large animals can appear seemingly out of nowhere, making this a rewarding site for divers who enjoy pelagic encounters.
Marble Arch
Marble Arch offers a different style of underwater experience.
The reef sits at shallower depths than some of the area’s deeper offshore sites, making it an interesting option for divers who want to spend more time exploring the reef environment.
Look carefully and you will find that the smaller details can be just as fascinating as the larger animals.
Colourful reef fish, corals, smaller creatures and intricate reef structures create plenty to discover.
Office
Office is another site that demonstrates why you should not judge an Inhambane dive by its name.
Underwater, the reef offers interesting structure, depth and opportunities to encounter larger marine life.
It is also an excellent example of why local conditions matter. Depending on the day, current and marine activity can influence how the dive unfolds.
For experienced divers, this kind of unpredictability is part of the attraction.
Reggie’s
Reggie’s is a deeper offshore reef with impressive underwater structure and an abundance of life.
The reef’s topography creates plenty of places for marine life to gather, while the surrounding blue water keeps the possibility of a pelagic encounter constantly in the background.
As with many of Inhambane’s offshore sites, the dive should be planned around the conditions and the experience level of the divers.
Amazon Reef
Amazon is one of our furthest dive sites — and the journey is part of what makes reaching it worthwhile.
The reef forms a distinctive horseshoe shape, with an inner sandy and rocky bottom and an outer reef top. The site reaches depths suitable for experienced divers and offers the possibility of some particularly exciting encounters.
Among the animals divers may encounter here are:
- Whitetip reef sharks
- Leopard sharks
- Occasional hammerheads
- Large blotched fantail rays
- Barracuda
- Large schools of reef fish
Because of its depth and sensitive topography, Amazon is a site for experienced divers and requires suitable conditions.
This is one of those dives where patience pays off.
Coliseum and Other Offshore Reefs
The Inhambane dive map extends well beyond the handful of sites that are most frequently mentioned online.
Coliseum and the area’s other offshore reefs offer further opportunities to explore different reef structures, depths and marine habitats.
And this is one of the reasons we encourage divers not to plan their entire holiday around one specific dive site.
The real adventure is discovering the whole reef system.
What Marine Life Can You See While Diving in Inhambane?
If you are coming to Mozambique to dive, chances are you have marine life high on your list.
And this is where Inhambane really shines.
Manta Rays
Manta rays are among the most iconic animals associated with diving in Mozambique.
Seeing one underwater is difficult to describe until you have experienced it yourself.
They can appear almost weightless as they glide through the water, using their enormous wings to move effortlessly above the reef.
But manta sightings are never guaranteed.
Instead of chasing a particular animal at a particular site, our approach is to consider recent sightings, conditions and the behaviour of the ocean when selecting dive sites.
That is one of the advantages of diving with a local team that knows the reefs.
Whale Sharks
Whale sharks are another major attraction of the Inhambane coastline.
These enormous but generally gentle filter-feeding sharks can reach extraordinary sizes, yet their movement through the water is surprisingly graceful.
Whale sharks are not a reef species in the same way as many of the fish and smaller marine animals you will see while diving.
They are wild, highly mobile animals.
That means encounters are never guaranteed — but when one appears, it can instantly become the dive you remember for years.
Turtles
Mozambique’s waters are home to several turtle species, and turtles are regularly among the marine animals divers hope to encounter.
Watching a turtle move across a reef is one of those moments that encourages you to slow down.
We don’t chase. We don’t crowd it. We simply watch.

Sharks and Rays
Sharks are an important part of the marine ecosystem around southern Mozambique.

From manta rays and devil rays to large fantail rays and stingrays, the variety can be extraordinary.

Humpback Whales
From approximately June to September, humpback whales migrate through the waters of the Mozambican coastline.
This creates an incredible seasonal atmosphere above and below the surface.
Even when you are diving, you may be reminded that something much larger is moving through the ocean around you.
You might hear distant whale song underwater.
You may see whales from the boat between dives.
Or you can specifically book a whale-watching experience during the migration season.

Is Inhambane Good for Beginner Divers?
Absolutely.
You do not need to be an experienced diver to discover scuba diving in Mozambique.
At SEE Activity Center, beginners can start with a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience, which introduces you to scuba equipment and basic skills before taking you into calm open water under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional. The experience is available from age 10 and requires no previous diving experience.
For those who want to become fully certified, the PADI Open Water Diver course is the starting point for independent recreational scuba diving.
No previous scuba diving experience is required.
The course combines knowledge development, confined-water training and open-water dives, giving you the skills and confidence to continue exploring the underwater world.
Learning to Dive in Mozambique

SEE operates recreational dives only, with a maximum depth of 40 metres.
There are currently no wreck dives or night dives offered at SEE, so the focus is firmly on the natural reef environment and the marine life that makes Inhambane special.
How Many Days Do You Need for a Diving Holiday in Inhambane?
This depends entirely on how much you want to dive.
For a first-time visitor who wants to experience the destination without spending the entire holiday underwater, we recommend allowing several days.
A longer stay gives you the flexibility to:

What Is the Best Time to Dive in Inhambane?
There is no single “perfect” month to dive in Inhambane.
Different seasons bring different experiences.
June to September
This is the humpback whale migration season and one of the most exciting periods for marine wildlife lovers.
For divers, it offers the possibility of combining exceptional reef diving with whale encounters above and around the dive boat.
October to November
As the whale migration season winds down, the ocean remains an attractive destination for diving and other water-based activities.
December to February
The summer months bring warm tropical conditions and are an excellent time to enjoy Mozambique’s beaches and ocean activities alongside diving.
March to May
This can be a quieter period to explore the reefs while enjoying the changing character of the Mozambican coastline.
Ultimately, the best time depends on what you want to experience.
If humpback whales are high on your wish list, plan around their seasonal migration.
If your priority is simply exploring the reefs, marine life and underwater landscape, there is something to discover throughout the year.
Diving in Barra vs. Tofo
One of the most common questions we hear is whether you should stay in Tofo or Barra for diving.
The good news? You don’t necessarily have to choose.
Barra and Tofo are only approximately 15 minutes apart by road, making it possible to explore both areas during the same holiday. They also share all of the same dive sites, so there isn’t a decision to be made.
What matters more is finding the dive operation and accommodation that best suits the type of holiday you want.

What Is Diving with SEE Activity Center Like?

Our PADI Professionals are Emergency First Response trained, and dive activities are equipped with first aid supplies, emergency oxygen, an oxygen mask and boat communication equipment.
We also take a conservative approach to diving.
Conditions are assessed before every dive, and site selection is adjusted according to weather, sea state, current, diver experience and other relevant factors.
Sometimes that means changing the plan. And that is okay.

We provide the essential equipment required for your dive, with rental equipment available.
However, if you have your own favourite mask, fins, computer or other personal equipment, you are welcome to bring it.
